Funding of the Judiciary: Allow us To enjoy our independence! CJN fires at the Executive!
The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Ibrahim Tanko Mohammad (CFR) was today on ground at the commencement of the 59th edition of the Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association holding at the Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.
The CJN amongst many issues, lamented the issue of the funding of the Judiciary. If you say or claim independence, he said, but in a way have to "go and bend down and ask him" then you are not truly independent.
Funding the Judiciary, more especially, at the state level is a problem, he further stated, and it affects the effectiveness in the dispensation of justice.
He called for support from the bar to "take the bull by the horn".
He also called for the need for lawyers to adhere to the ethics of the profession in all ways, including desisting filing of fresh appeals on issues already decided by the Supreme Court.
Finally, he wished the delegates a hitch free conference.
